30 for 30 Who Is That?: “What if I told you that veteran staff and leadership staff don’t understand the power of new staff. Come learn how new staff can be the Orlando MAGIC of your camp!”
This week, I was able to present at our YMCA Summer Day Camp Summit for all of our Directors across multiple branches on the topic of training new staff. I love to try and make trainings fun, so I went with a 30 for 30 ESPN documentary correlation to training new staff. Let me warn you, if you are not a sports fan, it is ok. The presentation breaks it down step by step.
The correlation is that the Orlando Magic in the 90’s were a new team that got lucky in the NBA draft, and were able to secure Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway. They beat Michael Jordan and the Bulls to make it to the NBA Finals. They didn’t win a championship, but the value of new players (new staff) is key to a championship (Great Summer). It is also key to have older players (veteran staff) to lean on, and push you to that finish line. The Orlando Magic would have not been successful without those young players, so value them! I grew up in the 90’s, and putting this together made this task even more fun. I encourage you in your job to think of ways to make it fun, but reach your intended audience. If you are having fun, your audience will too! When I asked the room, almost everyone has heard of the 30 for 30 documentaries. We have all sat in trainings where it is literally slide by slide, or reading off a handout. Get people out of their seat, have them demonstrate, and ask questions. I included the presentation in the Resource Zone under Staff Trainings. Steal, Share, Go!
