It’s snowing and cold outside. Time to drop it like it’s hot, and try a game called “Drop It, Catch It.” This is an easy game that requires just a ball and little bit of space. This game is also great at getting kids to listen and focus. This game like many that are in the Resource Zone on this website are fun for staff to try as well.
Drop It, Catch It is a fun game! Any age can play, and sometimes younger kids can beat older kids. It is truly all about listening and reaction time/reflex. The leader of the game stands in the middle of the circle. The leader will say drop it or catch it before he or she throws the ball. If the leader says drop it, and the player catches it, they are out and must sit down and wait for another group to form. If the leader says drop it, and the player catches it, they are still in. This game is basically doing the opposite of what the leader says, like in Simon Says.
In games with kids or staff, it is important to not give people too much down time. They get in trouble or become bored. So, instead of having to sit down for the whole game, form another circle with the people that are out. Play multiple games until the last player is standing. The winner can now be in the middle of the circle, and become the game leader.
There is a similar game in the Resource Zone called “Nervous Breakdown”. Check that one out on the website as well!
