Life Is Not An Accident – Jay Williams

I recently flew out to Anaheim a few weeks ago, and read this whole book from cover to cover during that flight. As a UNC fan, I grew up watching him play and literally destroy the competition. This book is more than just talking about basketball, even though some of the stories about Carlos Boozer and playing at Duke are pretty funny. I appreciate Jay’s honesty and willingness to put out all of his raw emotions and thoughts into writing this. We live in a world of Instagram, Facebook, and Social Media that generate a fake look at the world. Everyone struggles, EVERYONE. You may not think this when you are scrolling through everyday, but they do. When you are in the struggle, it is hard to find that perspective. Jay talks about how hard it was to get out of this dark place. This is a great book to use as a devotion or community builder with your staff, colleagues, and older teens.  There are so many life lessons that you can use from this. Here are my favorite quotes from this book…

1.”The past should be left in the past or it can steal your future. Live life for what today can bring and not what yesterday has taken away.”

2. “You have to live life and experience things to gain perspective. And you make mistakes along the way, while hopefully learning from them in order to grow.”

3.“I realized I needed to learn how to try and forgive people for their mistakes if I was ever going to learn how to forgive myself for mine.”

4. “What happens if I were to live my life with no excuses?”

If you haven’t yet, definitely give this book a try. I have also included these quotes and questions in the Resource Zone as a devotion so you can use this as a guide.
